Many people know Balatonboglár only from the gazebo, but down below, directly underneath it, there is a beach area that is one of the most human places on the south shore. It’s not overstuffed, it’s not overbranded – it’s that classic Balaton vibe you might remember from your childhood, only now they brew better coffee and have kraft beer.
There’s space on the beach – really. There are no umbrellas shoved in your face, it’s not crowded, it’s not like someone is climbing on you while you’re setting up your sunbed. You can blow out here, you can stretch out. And one of the best parts? There’s the Terrace next door, which is really a little bistro, but so much more. I sat down for a quick spritzer at one point, then three hours later I was still sitting there – already munching on a burger, chatting to a guy I’d met that day. Because it’s so easy there – everyone’s slower, friendlier, not rushing anywhere.
The music is always just what it should be. Before the sun goes down, for example, there’s this soft electro chill going on – not a beat, more the kind where you just put your head down and watch the sun turn the water golden. The glass is steamy, the beer is cold, and if you’re lucky, you might even slip into an evening of jazzy live music.
